Retail and hospitality units are perfectly suited to be integrated with EPOS technology as there are constant transactions taking place, which means there is a lot of potential for money to be mishandled.

In this blog, we will outline what technology will help to make your enterprise function as smoothly as possible.

EPOS Equipment Which Helps with Transactions

Of all the EPOS equipment available, the following makes transactions significantly smoother:

  • Electronic Tills
  • Barcode Scanners
  • Cash Drawers
  • Receipt Printers

Epos Equipment Which Helps with Transactions

Electronic Till

No matter how reliable and intelligent your staff are, everyone makes mistakes. Although this might only happen every twenty, thirty, or forty transactions, if they are sitting on the till all day it is inevitable.

Electronic tills which use a computer to process the transaction minimise this risk. So long as the employee scans every item through the till the final total will be displayed automatically and correctly. As with all EPOS equipment, it combats the chance of human error.

Additionally, it can be programmed to calculate any offers and promotions which are running automatically. This ensures that customers will be charged appropriately, reducing the chance that they will have to return later for a correction which can ruin their experience with your business.

However, a till on its own is not much use…

Barcode Scanner

Even in small shops, it is entirely worthwhile to incorporate a barcode scanner. By doing so, the cashier has to do significantly less work, freeing them up to serve other customers or to take up alternative responsibilities in the store.

Keying in codes and prices manually presents a number of problems. Firstly, it can take a significant amount of time. Having to check each item for its code or price can take time, and keying them in takes even longer.

Additionally, there are plenty of opportunities to make mistakes. Not only can the wrong code be entered into the system, but a mishit key or misplaced point can drastically change the total price of the transaction.

By utilising a barcode scanner, the cashier can quickly get the transaction processed, fully confident that all of the information being entered is accurate.

However, when everything has been processed, the next step can also be made automatic.

Cash Drawers

An EPOS till drawer is a wonderful thing that integrates perfectly with the computer and display screen. After everything has been scanned through correctly, you or your employee will hit the total button and find the total the customer needs to pay.

If you pick debit or credit card, then the card machine will automatically light up. However, if they choose cash, another option can be programmed to appear in which you can detail precisely how much currency the customer hands over.

Cash Drawers

The machine will then open the drawer and calculate precisely how much change the customer is entitled to. Again, this minimises the risk that the cashier will make a mistake which will give the customer cause to complain.

Additionally, the system can be set up so that another transaction cannot go forward unless the drawer is closed. Often, the receipt won’t even be printed until the drawer is locked. This is fantastic for security and takes away the risk that the cash may be open to unwelcome hands.

Receipt Printers

The final part of the transaction process is giving the customer their receipt. In times gone by, the cashier would have to input the information to a machine in order to print it out. Alternatively, they would have to write it out on a piece of paper.

This, once again, takes time and introduces the possibility of human error. This can make any possible returns a real issue, as the record of sale might not be accurate.

An EPOS printer, on the other hand, will automatically print a record of the transaction along with all of the relevant information. The customer can then use this for his or her records, or use it to make a return transaction later.

Alternatively, EPOS equipment can allow you to take away the need for a physical receipt altogether. For the convenience of the customer, or to reduce the amount of paper being used, you could offer an e-mail receipt.

This can also be a fantastic way of keeping up with customers, as you could ask permission to use their e-mail to keep them informed with information about your business.
